SARAH AND HAGAR

OUTLINE

1. Sarah symbolizing the covenant of God’s promise:
   1. God’s promise being fulfilled by God’s grace for those who inherit the promise.
   2. Not by the energy of man’s flesh.
   3. Only those who are born of God’s promise, who are born according to the Spirit, being able to inherit God’s promised good land—Christ.
2. Hagar symbolizing the covenant of law:
   1. Bringing forth children unto slavery according to the law of Mount Sinai.
   2. Being born according to man’s flesh, not according to God’s grace.
   3. Having no share in God’s promised good land.
3. The covenant of God’s promise confirmed with the covenant of circumcision:
   1. Circumcision signifying the putting off of the flesh by the cutting off of the cross.
   2. Circumcision on the eighth day after birth signifying the receiving of the dealing of the cross in resurrection.
