THE TYPES IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

LESSON THREE

THE SACRIFICIAL SKINS, THE SACRIFICES,
THE BURNT OFFERINGS,
AND THE SEED OF THE WOMAN

OUTLINE

  1. Concerning Christ’s redemption:
    1. The sacrificial skins—the skins of the sacrifices with which Adam and Eve were clothed:
      1. The condition of Adam and Eve before the fall.
      2. After they sinned, having the sinful conduct, the sinful nature, and the consciousness of sin.
      3. The fallen Adam and Eve making skirts to cover their shame because of their consciousness of sin.
      4. God clothing them with coats made of the skins of sacrifices, typifying:
        1. That God caused Christ to be sacrificed for sinners as the substituting Lamb.
        2. That God made Christ the righteousness of the sinners who believe in Him that they may be justified and live before God.
    2. The sacrifices—the firstlings of the flock with their fat offered by Abel:
      1. Abel living before God by offering sacrifices according to God’s way of redemption.
      2. The firstlings of the flock which he offered, typifying Christ, who is unto God, who lives for God, and who is gentle and tender.
      3. The fat which he offered, being the fatness of the sheep, typifying the tender merits of Christ.
      4. The Christ-redeemed sinners needing to live before God by such a Christ.
    3. The burnt offerings—offered by Noah:
      1. Noah being saved by God from the old age of corruption into the new age of restoration.
      2. Building an altar to offer sacrifices as burnt offerings.
      3. This being the accomplishment of the initial types of Christ’s redemption:
        1. The burnt offering typifying the perfect Christ becoming a sweet-smelling savor unto God.
        2. That the earth might remain before God, signifying that the earth might minister to God.
  2. Concerning Christ’s salvation:
    1. The seed of the woman—the one who would save man:
      1. Typifying Christ, who was born of a virgin.
      2. To bruise the head of the serpent for man, typifying that Christ would destroy Satan.
    2. The ancient serpent—the one who was to be destroyed:
      1. Signifying the subtle one, the devil, Satan.
      2. To bruise the heel of the seed of the woman, typifying that Satan would hurt Christ, who caused Satan’s death.
