A brother once studied the word calling. He put several dozen verses together and grouped them into ten sections. For illustration, I will list them in the following sections:
- Section One-The source of our calling:
- The primary source-God (1 Thes. 2:12).
- The intermediary source-Jesus Christ (Rom. 1:6).
- Section Two-The called ones:
- Scope (general)-all men (1 Cor. 1:24).
- Scope (spiritual)-sinners (Luke 5:32).
- God’s valuation-vessels of mercy (Rom. 9:23-24).
- Actual condition-not many who are wise (1 Cor. 1:26).
- Section Three-The goal of our calling:
- Repentance (Luke 5:32).
- Salvation (2 Thes. 2:13-14).
- Peace (Col. 3:15).
- Light (1 Pet. 2:9).
- Fellowship (1 Cor. 1:9).
- Service (Rom. 1:1).
- Freedom (Gal. 5:13).
- Holiness (1 Cor. 1:2).
- Suffering (1 Pet. 2:21).
- Eternal life (1 Tim. 6:12).
- Eternal inheritance (Heb. 9:15).
- Eternal glory (1 Pet. 5:10).
- Section Four-The principle of calling:
- According to God’s plan (Rom. 8:28).
- According to God’s grace (2 Tim. 1:9).
- Not according to man’s merit (2 Tim. 1:9).
- Section Five-The sphere of our calling:
- In the Lord (1 Cor. 7:22).
- In grace (Gal. 1:6).
- In peace (1 Cor. 7:15).
- In sanctification (1 Thes. 4:7).
- In one Body (Col. 3:15).
- Section Six-The way we are called:
- Through the gospel (2 Thes. 2:14).
- Through God’s grace (Gal. 1:15).
- Through God’s glory (2 Pet. 1:3).
- Through the divine nature (2 Pet. 1:3).
- Section Seven-The nature of our calling:
- Holy (2 Tim. 1:9).
- From above (Phil. 3:14).
- Heavenly (Heb. 3:1).
- Humble (1 Cor. 1:26).
- Section Eight-The requirements for our calling:
- Remaining in it (1 Cor. 7:20, 24).
- Walking according to it (1 Cor. 7:17).
- Counted worthy of it (Eph. 4:1).
- Counted worthy of the God who calls us (1 Thes. 2:12).
- Being diligent (2 Pet. 1:10).
- Section Nine-The encouragement of our calling:
- Hope (Eph. 1:18; 4:4).
- Reward (Phil. 3:14).
- Section Ten-The guarantee of our calling:
- God’s nature-faithfulness (1 Cor. 1:9; 1 Thes. 5:24).
- God’s plan (Rom. 8:30).
- God’s grace (Rom. 11:29).
